September is Suicide Prevention Month, our sophomore students will be attending an assembly on Tuesday, September 14th during 1st period from 8:10am-9am. St. Georges Tech has a student led organization called UnLocke The Light that focuses on promoting awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. They provide supervised peer mental health support and fosters the idea that students who are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed are not alone.
The main objective of the assembly is to educate and increase awareness of depression and anxiety as well as realize the impact of suicide on family and friends. The presentation aims to remove the stigma of depression so people can speak about it as a disease and not something to keep secret. We provide tools to the students as to how to get help if they are suffering or if they know someone else who may be suffering.
The presentation was compiled with the assistance of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Mental Health Association in Delaware. The speakers are Mr. Chris Locke who provides a parent perspective. Jennifer Seo, Executive Director of MHA, who provides the informational portion which is broken up in three parts; 1) types of depression and signs of depression, 2) Potential signs of someone at risk for suicide and tools/ resources 3) the effect social media has on depression and anxiety. One of Sean Locke's siblings will speak and two of Sean's friends (both registered nurses) so students can see the effect suicide has on others and loved ones who are left behind. It is very powerful. If time permits, we can do a Q/A. Support staff and guidance counselors are prepared to discuss any issues/concerns students may have after the presentation.
