Below are questions frequently asked by students and their families:
Is there a tuition fee for attending?
No, Howard, Delcastle, Hodgson, and St. Georges are public high schools, so there is no tuition fee for attending.
Is transportation provided?
Yes, our high schools provide free, countywide transportation, including athletic and activity bus services for all students. For more details, please visit the Transportation section of this website.
Are there sports and extracurricular activities?
Yes, all schools offer a variety of sports programs and extracurricular activities, including student government, honor societies, drama, newspaper, and yearbook. Additionally, each career program offers involvement in local chapters of national vocational organizations, with opportunities to participate in local, state, and national skill competitions.
How many career programs are available?
Students can choose from 41* career programs in six categories: Business, Communications & Computers, Construction Technologies, Health Services, Public & Consumer Services, Science, Energy & Drafting Technologies, and Transportation.
*Please note that the number of programs offered may vary year to year, and not all programs are available at every school.
Who can apply for admission?
Any 8th-grade student living within the Appoquinimink, Brandywine, Christina, Colonial, or Red Clay school districts in New Castle County is eligible to apply for 9th grade.
How and when can I apply?
Students can apply online at schoolchoicede.org during the State of Delaware's open application period, which runs from November 4, 2024, to January 8, 2025.
What is considered a completed application?
A completed application includes the submission of all online forms, the final 7th-grade report card, the most recent 8th-grade report card, including attendance (Progress reports or interim report cards are not accepted.), and discipline records for the 2023-2024 and current school year. For discipline records, please provide one of the following:- A printed discipline report from the school’s computer system (e.g., eSchool).
- A letter on official school letterhead detailing any suspensions, detentions, or confirmation of no incidents.
- A completed Student Data Sheet.
How are students selected?
Students are selected based on attendance, grades, and the availability of space in their chosen career program. Efforts are made to place students in their first choice of school and program, but if space is limited, students may be offered their second or third choice.
When should I submit my application?
8th-grade applications should be submitted by the second Wednesday in January. If there are openings, 9th-grade applications can be submitted in May.
When will I know if I’m accepted?
8th-grade applicants will be notified by the first week of March.
Do promotion requirements affect admission?
Yes, admission is provisional until students meet their district’s promotion requirements, including passing English and at least one core academic subject such as Math, Science, or Social Studies.
Can VoTech graduates attend college?
Yes, more than 80% of our graduates pursue further education at technical/trade schools, colleges, universities, or apprenticeships.
Is Driver Education available?
Yes, Driver Education is provided to all 10th-grade students during the school day.
