Surgical Technology
Overview
The Surgical Technology program is a comprehensive two-year program designed for students starting in their junior year, following the successful completion of core studies in Medical Technology and Anatomy & Physiology during their sophomore year. The program provides a deep dive into the healthcare environment, specifically focusing on the surgical setting. Students are introduced to the foundational principles of surgical technology, and then apply this knowledge through hands-on practice in the Surgical Tech Laboratory. The program also includes advanced studies in medical terminology and surgical anatomy and physiology, preparing students for a successful career as a Surgical Technologist.

- Introduction to Surgical Technology: Overview of the healthcare and surgical environment, history of surgical technology, and the importance of asepsis
- Principles and Practice of Surgical Technology: Hands-on application of surgical principles, teamwork in the O.R., surgical conscience, patient safety, and sterile technique
- Surgical Tech Laboratory: Practice of essential skills for Surgical Technologists, skill assessment with instructor feedback, and evidence-based practices
- Medical Terminology: Advanced study of prefixes, suffixes, root words, and abbreviations related to surgical pathology and interventions
- Surgical Anatomy and Physiology I & II: Application of anatomy and physiology to practical surgery, with a focus on organ systems and their relation to surgical procedures
Learning Experience
Students in the Surgical Technology program engage in both theoretical learning and hands-on practice, ensuring a well-rounded education in the field. The program emphasizes the importance of teamwork, communication, and professionalism in the operating room, along with a strong foundation in medical terminology and anatomy. Students practice essential surgical skills in the lab, receiving consistent feedback to ensure proficiency. The program also offers dual enrollment opportunities for qualified second-semester seniors, allowing them to earn college credits while completing their high school education.

Earning Potential Range:
$37,500 to $71,000 per year, depending on role and experience.
